The White Sea Biological Station was founded in 1949.
It is situated on the Kartesh Cape in the Kandalaksha Bay (66ø20'N 33ø40'E) near the Polar Circle.
A small sea cove from one side and fine deep lake with very clean water confine WSBS.
There are no polluting enterprises.
The distance from the nearest railway station Chupa is about 30 km.
One can find different bottom landscapes such as rocky, sandy and muddy shores near the Station.

Dozens of islands are covered with pine forest, tundra and peatmoss boggs which are typical landscape of the place.
The maximal depth of the White Sea (340 m) is situated close to Kartesh. The estuary of the Keret river is only few kilometers to the South.

Water salinity varies from 0 % in estuaries to 30 % in the places where the depth exceeds 200 m.
Surface salinity in the open sea is about 25 %.
The upper water layers are warmed up to 12-15øC and are inhabited by boreal species.
Deep parts of the sea are occupied mainly by arctic fauna.
